                                    Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020

                                    Update: January 2011

                                    New:

                                    Toolkit for organizers: A toolkit for organizers of launch events has been developed to guide Member States and their partners in preparing for the launch. This toolkit includes the description of an ideal launch event and can be found at http://www.who.int/roadsafety/decade_of_action/toolkit/en/index.html . It is currently available in English, and should be available in February as a pdf document downloadable in all six UN languages.

                                    Calendar of activities: For the launch, a calendar of activities around the world has been developed, and may be accessed at http://www.who.int/roadsafety/decade_of_action/launch/national/en/index.html . Examples of high-profile national events which were posted include those from Mexico and South Africa. Many of you have informed us of other plans and preparations. Once your plans for the launch of the Decade are finalized, please register your event by completing this online form http://www.who.int/roadsafety/decade_of_action/launch/planned_events/en/index.html .

                                    Contacts: A listing of contacts for the Decade including national focal points has been developed and may be found at http://www.who.int/roadsafety/decade_of_action/focal/en/index.html . All governments are encouraged to nominate a national focal point to facilitate coordination at national level. These nominations should be sent to traffic@who.int or sminkeyl@who.int .

                                    Facebook: The Decade is now on Facebook. We invite you to join us there! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Decade-of-Action-for-Road-Safety-2011-2020/178222832190853?v=wall

                                    WHO Executive Board: An information paper on the Decade was discussed at the meeting of WHO's  Executive Board. The discussion was another opportunity for countries to welcome the Decade, highlight the need for multisectoral action, and inform others about their plans for the Decade and related launch on 11 May 2011.

                                    Reminders:

                                    Global Plan: To inspire or guide the development of national and local plans for the Decade, a Global Plan has been prepared with input from a broad range of stakeholders, including many Member States, following open consultation through the Web. The Global Plan is available in all six UN languages. Visit http://www.who.int/roadsafety/decade_of_action/plan/en/index.html .

                                    Symbol: The symbol for the Decade - the yellow road safety tag - has been finalized in all six UN languages as well as Bahasa Indonesia, Japanese, Javanese, Khmer, Portuguese, Swedish, Swahili, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese. To register your not for profit organization and accept the terms of use for the symbol, visit http://www.decadeofaction.org/resources/symbol.html . Private companies wishing to use the symbol should contact Saul Billingsley at saul@roadsafetyfund.org . If there are other national languages in which you would like the tag to appear, please provide a translation for "Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020" which is approved by your government by emailing traffic@who.int or sminkeyl@who.int .

                                    Other actions:
                                    Groups are encouraged to:
                                      • Advertise the Decade at every opportunity, flagging its potential to save millions of lives;
                                      • Invite governments to prepare and launch a national multi-sectoral plan for the Decade on 11 May 2011, in line with the Global Plan for the Decade;
                                      • Encourage governments to identify a national focal point for the Decade to facilitate coordination at national level;
                                      • Plan a high-profile national launch event on 11 May 2011, involving dignitaries from all sectors of society, road traffic victims and their families;
                                      • Engage with the media on the 11 May 2011 to cover related launch events and activities.
                                    This Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 is everybody's Decade. Together we can save millions of lives!
